PKI is based on asymmetric cryptography, where a user has a pair of cryptographic keys \u2013 a public key and a private key. Asymmetric cryptography allows the use to encrypt and sign data or messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A certificate authority is able to verify a certificate, i.e. the authenticity and the valid applications of public keys (and key pairs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PKI is based on the following components:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Certificate Authority, CA<\/li><li>Registration Authority, RA<\/li><li>Directory Service<\/li><li>Certificate Validation Service<\/li><li>and the relevant documentation (Certificate Policy, CP and Certificate Practice Statement, CPS)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>PKI can be used by a number of applications for various functions.
